01 / TRAVEL NOTES

Choose your skiing and starting point

A snow day on the Miyagi side

The current official name is Mountain Field Miyagi Zao Sumikawa. Above Togatta Onsen, the snowfield offers the Sumikawa slopes and higher terrain. Beginners should start on open gentle slopes with the school before heading onto the broader mountain.

Approach the park one step at a time

Park features and natural terrain are part of Sumikawa’s appeal. Their shape and availability change with snowfall and the season, so inspect the day’s layout and difficulty first. Mix park riding with ordinary runs suited to your ability, and adjust the day as weather changes.

A snowcat trip for non-skiers

Advance-booked snowcat tours leave from Sumikawa to visit the winter-tree landscape. Non-skiers can join this Miyagi Zao experience, but tree formation and operations depend on natural conditions. Combine it with time at Togatta Onsen or local crafts rather than assuming the trees will be at their best.
