Shimoyu Public Bath

Take a short bath at the public bath on Takayu Street. Shimoyu is a place you can stop by even in Zao in winter.

A village bath on a walk through the onsen town

If you want to add some bath time to your stroll along Takayu Street, consider Shimoyu Public Bath. This is a communal bath that is also used by local people, so the way you spend your time here is different from large facilities where you can relax for a long time. You will be asked to pay the bathing fee in a local box. Prepare your towel and coins and head on over.

Zao Onsen Tourism Association states that Shimoyu is open all year round. On snowy days, after bathing, wipe your body and put away your wet towel before going outside. If you are traveling with children, check the local temperature and bath rules, and start with short baths to make it easier.

02 / TRAVEL NOTES

Check winter opening dates separately from the large outdoor bath

Zao Onsen large open-air bath is a separate facility from Shimoyu Public Bath. According to the tourist association, the large open-air bath is closed during the winter from late November to mid-April. Do not plan to go to an open-air bath during the snowy season; instead, check the facility's official information on the opening hours on the day of your trip.

If you want to combine a winter stroll with a bath, you can choose a public bathhouse such as Shimoyu, which is open all year round. On days when you want to enjoy an open-air bath or a private bath, be sure to check separately for hotel accommodation plans and day-trip bath reception.

Leave your equipment and bring a change of clothes

Leave your ski equipment at your accommodation or the ski resort before walking around town. Winter streets can be snowy and icy: wear shoes with good grip and leave time for the return bus and dinner.

  • Check the operating information on the day of your trip and the local bathing rules.
  • Prepare a bag for towels, bath supplies, and wet items.
  • Before deciding to visit the large open-air bath, check that it is closed for the winter.
