See winter Hakkoda without skiing.
Ride to Sancho Koen Station and return by the same ropeway for a winter sightseeing visit. Snow- and ice-covered trees look different with the weather and visibility. Check the day’s operation before travelling; the scene in a clear-weather photograph is not guaranteed.
The view depends on the day
The operator’s FAQ gives January to late February as the usual snow-monster viewing period. Tree formations, snow, visibility and operation are not guaranteed. Check the official homepage’s operation status and its update time before setting out. Strong winds or severe weather can suspend service.
Check the last ascent and descent separately
The normal published schedule for mid-November through February starts at 09:00, with the last ascent at 15:40 and last descent at 16:00. Do not apply that schedule to March or other periods; check your date. About 10 minutes is the one-way ride, excluding queues and viewing time. A planned closure for maintenance and power works has been announced for 8–20 November 2026; plans may change.
Bring your own winter clothing and footwear
Even for sightseeing, bring your own warm clothing and footwear with suitable grip for snowy ground. Inclusion of clothing or shoe rental, a guide or transfers in a sightseeing ticket has not been confirmed. Ask the operator about individual booking and admission conditions.
Sightseeing and mountain skiing need different plans
Do not apply the summer Gourd Line walking guide to winter. The FAQ describes paths hidden by snow and says there is no hiking route down from the upper station to the boarding station. Ask staff where visitors may walk that day and plan to return by ropeway. Ski courses and guided mountain tours require separate decisions and preparation.
