01 / TRAVEL NOTES
Choose your skiing and starting point
From the train to your ski-day preparations
Seasonal Gala-Yuzawa Station connects directly to the ski centre, bringing rental equipment, changing facilities and the gondola into one starting point. It suits a car-free trip or a first snow holiday. Allow time after the train arrives to collect equipment and get ready before skiing.
Choose the central and northern terrain
The official announcement says the south area will be closed for 2026–27, with operations planned in the central and north areas. Do not plan from an old all-area map. Beginners can arrange lessons and gentle slopes; experienced skiers should choose from the day’s open terrain and snow conditions.
Make a day trip into an onsen stay
Visit GALA for the day, or stay in Echigo-Yuzawa for skiing, town dining and hot springs. An overnight stay leaves time for hegi soba, rice and local sake instead of rushing back to Tokyo. Decide whether your return starts at Gala-Yuzawa or Echigo-Yuzawa Station when booking transport.
A ski resort whose centre connects to Gala-Yuzawa Shinkansen Station. Check in and change at the station, then take the gondola to the slopes. A convenient starting point for a day trip or a Yuzawa onsen stay.
Published figures describe the scope noted below. Check today’s open terrain and lift status with the resort.
The longest 2,500 m run is Falcon, the descent to the base. Check its opening and closing time on the day. The south area is scheduled to close for 2026–27, so do not assume all 16 listed courses will operate.

The official fastest-train estimate is not the time for every service. Gala-Yuzawa Station connects to the centre; allow extra time for rentals, changing and the gondola.
Include rental collection, changing and the gondola ride alongside your return trains. For an overnight stay, decide whether to ski on arrival or departure day so dinner and bathing at the hotel can be unhurried.
The official announcement closes the south area for winter 2026–27. Use the travel-date map and lift status, not the total course count, to judge what will operate.
Day trip: work backwards from your return train
Return equipment and change before heading to the ticket gates. Do not depend on the Falcon descent being open: allow time to take the gondola back to the ski centre. Plan meals and breaks in advance if you want a longer ski day.
Stay in Echigo-Yuzawa: distinguish the two stations
Gala-Yuzawa and Echigo-Yuzawa are separate stations. Check which station your hotel collects from, shuttle stops and the last service. Compare hotels such as Yuzawa Grand and Takahan by baths, dinner and morning transport.
Compare rooms, meals and baths alongside the journey to GALA the next morning. The hotels below are not connected directly to GALA’s slopes. Check station pickup separately from resort transport, and choose a stay that fits dinner and your return train.

Baths & facilities
Communal baths differ from room bathrooms. Day bathing is currently closed; communal outdoor baths use winter circulation and heating.
Winter transport
Train-arriving overnight guests call after reaching the station. Meet near the west-exit taxi rank; no advance pickup-time bookings.
Kasumi no Ma is for overnight guests only. Discuss steps and stairs on routes to rooms, dining and baths.
These dining options are around Echigo-Yuzawa Station, rather than on the slopes. Allow for the journey from GALA, collecting luggage, opening hours and your train before choosing a meal.

Niigata rice, sake and gifts at Echigo-Yuzawa Station. Plan food and shopping with children separately from the tasting room for adults aged 20 and over.
Seasonal Gala-Yuzawa Station connects directly to the ski centre and is a different station from Echigo-Yuzawa. Check train operating dates and the station on your ticket, then agree with your hotel where to meet.
From Echigo-Yuzawa, check transport for the day and the return service. Allow time for changing, rentals and the gondola after arrival. This winter’s shuttle timetable and last service have not been verified in this update; use the latest official announcements.
